Lifecycle Analysis: Waffle Maker

My team analyzed a small heart shaped waffle maker’s environmental impact, created a system diagram and process tree, and finally designed a more sustainable product.

Waffle Maker Analysis

The first step was to take apart the waffle maker piece by piece in order to create a bill of materials (BOM). Then using Sustainable Minds we were able to input the data into the software in order to receive the environmental impact. My team estimated 1 year of use based on the performance and price point of the product.

Design Revision

Then my team designed a new product that functioned similarly (was able to create heart shaped waffles). The new waffle maker was a cast iron stove top device. It uses a cookie cutter like piece to create the heart shape.

Analysis

Above are the results of the analysis. Our revised design was able to outperform the original by 93%.
